Kathy's Birthday Ride


Start at Waveland Clock Tower - proceed south on bicycle path to Fullerton. Turn west on Fullerton to Cannon Drive. South on Cannon Drive to Webster. West (right) on Webster to Leavitt past Kathy's building at 1113 Webster.

Turn south(left) on Leavitt Observe art & philosophy on the wall at 1800 N. Keep going on Leavitt until Division St. St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital is where Lutheran Deaconess Hospital used to be. Kathy was born there on 10 Oct, 41.

Turn right on Division to next corner, Oakley and turn north on Oakley until Wabansia. Turn left (west) on Wabansia until dead end at Western. Turn right until Moffat. Turn left on Moffat until Rockwell. Turn right on Rockwell. Left on Homer. Right on Washtenaw. Left on Armitage. Right on California. Stay on California a long time (3 miles) until California Park which is available for a rest stop. If necessary because of road construction, ride on park paths in California Park.

Turn left on Montrose. Turn right on Mozart (half block west) and go two blocks and turn left on Wilson.

Right on Hamlin. At corner of Hamlin and Leland, observe First Residence of the baby Kathy 3804 W. Leland. Proceed north on Hamlin until Ainslie where you turn right. Pass former location of Temple Beth Israel where Kathy was confirmed, former home of Deborah Boys Club at corner of Kimball & Ainslie, where Kathy took her first and last puff on a cigarette. One block later pass William G. Hibbard Grammar School where Kathy excelled in her studies from 1946 until 1954.

One block later, turn right into Troy St. At 4854 is the house Kathy lived in from 1942 until 1962. Observe colorful window frames designed by the current occupants. There is a pet chicken in the yard. Proceed on Troy to Lawrence Ave., where you will turn right until Sawyer, and turn right again, passing William G. Hibbard School again and noting the brand new addition in the rear, obliterating any space in which children can play.

Turn left after new construction on Argyle St. until you get to Kimball, where you turn right, passing Von Steuben High School, where Kathy studied from 1954 until 1958.

Continue on Kimball until Devon. Cross Devon and proceed on bicycle path through Skokie North Shore Sculpture Garden and Ladd Arboretum. Turn right at the bridge on Green Bay Rd., Turn left on Noyes. Arrive at Sheridan Road and turn right, entering the Northwestern University campus through the Garrett Theological Seminary parking lot. Proceed through the campus to (optional) rest stop in beach/park south of campus. Continue through Dawes Park until an unsigned road which allows you to turn left on Sheridan Road until Davis. Take Davis about a mile to Florence. Turn right on Florence less than a block to Church. Turn left on Church. Continue into Skokie and turn left on Keating (about 3 miles) Pass Mother Schubert's home at 9103 Keating. Emergency rest stop if needed.

Turn left on Davis to Niles Center Rd. and turn right on Gross Point. At intersection of Niles Center and Skokie Blvd., veer left onto Skokie Blvd and take this all the way to Touhy in Lincolnwood (about 2.5 miles).

Turn left on Touhy and into New York Bagel & Bialy. My apologies to those who prefer side streets, but we would have to ride a lot more miles just to avoid riding on Skokie Blvd.)

Cross Touhy after munching bagel and proceed south on Kilpatrick to Devon. Left on Devon to Kenton (less than a block). Right on Kenton/Lemont, left on Keating, then left on Caldwell. Right on Kilbourn (no sign), left on Bryn Mawr. for two miles. Right on St. Louis. Pass WTTW/Channel 11 where Kathy worked in 1966-7. Left on Berwyn (one block before Foster - unsigned). 3 blocks & right on Kedzie. 2 blocks and left on Carmen. Enter River Park and exit on and exit on Lawrence Ave. Left on Manor. 4 blocks and cross Montrose. Enter Horner Park. Four blocks later cross Irving Park to enter California Park, coming out onto California Ave. at Gordon Tech H.S. (between Grace & Waveland.)

Turn left on Addison to Rockwell St. Turn right and ride through park along river. Exit park at Belmont. Cross the street and take Belmont to Clybourn a few blocks. Turn right onto Clybourn 2 blocks to Wellington. Left on Wellington about a mile and right on Lincoln, stopping for lunch at the Red Lion Pub, where we've been promised that special bikes can be locked in their storage room while we eat. Feast on Shepherd's Pie, Steak & Kidney Pie or Bangers and Mash. If you plan to continue to 57 miles, stick to Scones & Jam or Welsh Rarebit. approximately 40 miles

After lunch, if you're game, continue south on Lincoln , turn into Halsted and continue until a left turn at Belden (2300N) takes you in front of 746 W. Belden where Kathy lived for a few years about 23 years ago. Take Belden to Lincoln. Turn right on Lincoln Ave. to Wells. At 1750 Wells, look up to the 3rd floor porch which once was part of the apartment in which Kathy lived and started her My Sister's Cutting Room film editing business.

Take Wells 3 miles south to Harrison and take that left to Plymouth Court where at 731 S.you will find the AYH Summer Youth Hostel (now closed for the winter) where Kathy volunteered as a concierge this summer.

Turn left on Polk and right on State to Cermak Road. Left on Cermak a few blocks and right into Martin Luther King Drive. Turn left into Prairie Shores development at 26th St. Kathy lived at 2851 S. Parkway in 1967 (year of the big snow).Exit apartment complex on 31st with a left turn to Lakefront path and go north until reaching Waveland Clock Tower.

At least 57 miles
